GET NOTICED
At Lina Mandla Solutions we prioritize quality over quantity. Which is why we have decided to share some tips for our clients applying for jobs in this new normal.
We understand that it has been difficult in the past few months as the country’s business operations were put on hold and therefore much fewer job openings were being advertised. When applying for a job, it has always been important to get things right from the CV submission stage, right to the last stage of the process.
Below here are some do’s and don’ts when preparing your CV for submission to personnel agency or prospective employer;
What needs to be on your CV
- Your demographic information
- Your geographic information
- Your contact details
- It is nice to have a professional headshot (occupying a small area on the first page only) of yourself on CV, experienced recruiters sometimes use instinct in the CV screening process where a bulk of CVs is received with similar characteristics
- Your detailed education history, with all the dates and duration of courses studies
- Your detailed experience history, dates and duration at each position held.
- Your reasons for leaving each company you worked for
- If there are any gaps in your work experience, it helps to have explanations as to why you have been unemployed for each gap period
- A brief honest summary of your personality will spark some curiosity for the person screening CV, also it makes it easy to immediately decide whether the person may be a good culture fit if you pass the interview stage
What does not need to be on your CV
- Your ID number (rather have your date of birth on CV). You may only provide an ID number when requested by the recruiter
- Your home address, just having your regional area and suburb is sufficient at this stage
- Your hobbies, this tends to just increase the CV pages unnecessarily
- Fancy fonts are not necessary, stick to the professional fonts that are easy to read
- References, they may only be provided when requested, you must always be careful not to just give out information about others, even if they have agreed to be your referee
ATTENDING A VIRTUAL INTERVIEW
- Always do your research on the company to interview you, find out what they have gone through during these trying times so as to show empathy and an understanding of the changes in the economy currently
- Do your research on the interviewers, to help calm your nerves a bit by finding out what to expect more or less in the interview
- Technically prepare for your virtual interview long before the day of the interview, check your device
- Do a mock interview with a friend if you have to, in order to ensure that your speaker, lighting and everything else is working properly on your chosen online platform
- On the day of the interview, select a quiet area with good lighting away from all indirect destructions
- Ensure that your device is fully charged
- Ensure that your background does not have any destructions for the interviewer
- Dress appropriately for the interview
- Take a seat at least 30 minutes before the interview starts
- Position your device to be on the same level as your face to avoid looking strange to the other person on the other side
- Sit up straight with head held up high on your chair and look confident
- Do not be fiddling with buttons and things whilst you are being interviewed
- Look the interviewer straight in the eyes, if not the eyes then the forehead, but not anywhere else that is not on the screen
- After the interviewer has closed the interview, do not leave the meeting screen until the interviewer has left, just in case they miss something and want to go back to questioning
- And lastly, always remember to wear your friendly face
We trust that the above will assist in getting you your dream job even under the current circumstances.
